A question came up during our Wednesday Night Men's Bible Study about what a Godly Father looks like. Our own Sean Laughery came up with this list. Please feel free to share this to your friends and family.
- Pastor Scott Anderson
Colossians 3:21 Amp
Fathers, do not provoke or irritate or exasperate your children [with demands that are trivial or unreasonable or humiliating or abusive; nor by favoritism or indifference; treat them tenderly with lovingkindness], so they will not lose heart and become discouraged or unmotivated [with their spirits broken].
- Being a man of God. A man of God is found at church.
1. Bringing kids to church regularly
2. Asking questions about what they learned
3. Challenging them to think and respond
4. Making learning about God/Jesus Fun: invest time with your kids, reading supplemental books, watching Christian shows and movies
- Being that example
1. Treat people fairly - we are the ambassadors of the family, lead by example
2. Be approachable
3. Be slow to anger
4. Have well established rules and provide in writing if needed
5. If you have to correct children, make them understand why
6. Train them, be a teacher: Bible, money, politics
7. Dedicate time to be together as a family DAILY
8. Never undermine your wife, be a united front. Don't argue in front of them!
9. Always be decent and modest in appearance
10. Never use profanity
11. Do not give them adult responsibilities. Give things to their level. Example: don't put things on them like paying bills, or finances
12. Be PRESENT for things that are important to them
13. Reward them appropriately
14. Encourage them DAILY and encourage them to be independent and encourage them to have good sibling relationships - teamwork, fun activities, teaching how to work out disagreement
